The idea behind “Traces” came around in 2004, when I was living at Madrid’s Plaza Cascorro, and being used to co-exist with Madrid’s flea market - El Rastro -. The way the market shaped social life in the area, and the peculiar soundscape it created, prompted me to start registering the ever-changing sound environments of El Rastro throughout a typical market day. Inevitably, the process of recording and archiving material lead to a reflection on the documentary value of sound, and on what the phonographer’s role should be in such a context.
These pieces were produced on the basis of recordings taken between April and December 2010. Since most of them are binaural recordings, for best results, it is advisable to use headphones when listening.
